What is i Run and Rock “UNITED by TRAUMA” ? and Why are we doing this?

I run and rock is a day of appreciation and awareness for those professionals and their families who make daily sacrifices to keep our communities safe…..

The tragic side of being a lifesaver includes the constant exposure to critical and traumatic incidents. Through these incidents may be within their professional abilities, too often this exposure results in operational stress injuries such as depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)….there is a way through….

How does Your Tree Bend??

Very interesting meeting with a Police Officer, a doctor and a University Student about Post Traumatic Stress and things that need to change within the First Responder and Medical Communities. We talked about how we as seasoned professionals in our respective work places need to keep moving forward and paving a new path so the generation of frontline workers are more equipped and have the education about trauma in the work place….how to identify signs of trauma in themselves or in a colleague. Text books are great but when reality in the workplace sets in, there is no time for re-dos or pressing the restart button.

And what happens after a diagnose of PTSD?  There is life after PTS….it is called RESILIENCY!! It is the will to keep moving forward, not saying that there won’t be hurdles or set backs along the way, but it is the survivor instinct that we all have to keep moving forward!!!

And what is Resiliency?? “It has been characterized as the ability to bounce back from adversities..”bend not break”…under extreme stress, handle setbacks and perservere in spite of ongoing stresses and even when things go awry.

“Resilience is more the rule rather than the exception…more common than rare.” Resilience is a NOT a sign of exceptional strength but a fundamental feature of normal coping skill…it is ORDINARY MAGIC and we all have it!!”

Teacher switches to student!!!

There is a very special place not far from  here called The Trauma Centre….it is a beautiful vintage farmhouse that has become a soothing/healing place for First Responders that are affected by Post Traumatic Stress. They have a lovely meditation garden that the First Responders have built to support this facility. I started classes there back in September and always felt a special connection to it.  I first became introduced to the centre by a Police Officer that I met in the spring at a conference. He is a very interesting man, he is not a huge talker but for whatever reason he sat beside me… since then we have become connected with a huge project and he is the one that connected me to a wonderful place that I can’t believe exists in our own backyard!!  Tonight’s class was very special because one of the Police Officers/Yoga teacher that attended training taught a portion of the class. I became the student and she the teacher and I was truly amazed, but not surprised what a terrific job she did. As I was following her instructions…I felt a wonderful release from my day in the OR. Then as we switched back from student to teacher I was thinking… here we are all emergency services in this room and yoga has bonded us together…

Yesterday I had a chat we a surgeon that I have become very connected to. 5 years ago I thought he was a real piece of work, but over time we gelled and now we talk about yoga and he enlightens one some rare topic that I wouldn’t even think of!!  Even though he does not attend my classes because geographically it is very challenging..he does attends 3 yoga classes a week. Before he thought yoga was “BS” and now he is doing postures by the scrub sink and chanting OM!!  There has been many times we have disagreed and we have both become frustrated we each other but his support and friendship has always remained 110%!!  Most of all he has been a wonderful teacher in the OR and friend!!  We are probably the most unlikely two people to ever connect….but we did!!

Namaste

Heidi….you are a wonderful yoga teacher!!!!

My CEO a Nasa Astronaut!!!!

Back in the spring on a whim I decided to give a copy of the Esprit de Corps magazine that was fresh off the press with the first article that my friend Paul appeared in (his pic is on my home page, yup he is the OPP Officer doing yoga in Uniform) so I went up to my CEO’s Office at Southlake with the mag in my hand, asked his assistance if I could share this story with him? I have to say I was a nervous because my CEO is just not a regular CEO…. he is a Nasa Astronaut!! My palms started to get a little sweaty as a sat in the chair just outside his office….then I thought what the hell am I going to say to this guy and what if I get in trouble  going to the CEO without permission from the  chain of command…then I thought well what is the worst that can happen …I am handed a pink slip and then I have plenty of time to teach more yoga classes (LOL).  Dave’s office door opened and then he asked me to come in and have a seat. He asked “what can I do for you Nicole?”, nothing I replied I just wanted to give you this magazine with a article in it about the special program that I do when I am not working in the OR”.  And then I thought…my gosh he is going to think I am a complete idiot…why would he care about a  trauma sensitive yoga program for First Responders that I started here in Canada.  He looked at the magazine and commented on Paul’s photo and how powerful it is and how brave Paul was for doing that pic in uniform. He mentioned that yoga was part of Nasa training to decompress after missions and it made complete sense to him. Fast Forward many months and several conversations later with my CEO Dave Williams and now I have the support of entire hospital.  As I was recently driving home from a meeting with Dave I was thinking…holy crap this guy has been to the moon and now he is helping me help thousands of First Responders….it may sound corny but really anything is possible especially with the right chemistry of people come together….change will happen!!

A police officer asked me last week…How do you plan to climb this mountain that stands before you? I replied…” one foot in front of the other!!”

A good friend of mine also told me that hurdles are good along the way…they make you battle ready!! PS:There is no one else I would rather have than Billy prepare me for battle!!!

Many thanks to Dave Williams (CEO of Southlake) and his support. (Keep reaching for the moon..even if you miss you will land among the stars)!!

My little Brothers!!!

Your right Billy…hurdles really do make you battle ready!!

I wrote a blog a few weeks ago “Hurdles: make you battle ready according to Billy”!! My gosh Billy you are right (again)!!  One huge hurdle has been the design of my logo. Bill and his wife Jane inspired the logo with the maple leaf and the yoga person! The three of us spent hours around their pool thinking about the logo and also to implement more Canadian content into Taylor Made Yoga!  After many weeks of Bill being very firm in his direction with me finally it’s here!    last week I happen to pass Bill downtown, he was on his Harley and I was in my Jeep, in typical fashion I did a “safe U-Turn” and flagged him down!!  Bill was decked out in his Harley attire and me in decked out in Lululemon stood in the parking lot of a Tim’s (How more Canadian can you get)!  Anyway everything just seemed to come to me over night, after weeks of toying with ideas….I handed Bill my black book of my work assignments, as he was flipping through the pages I was thinking ( Gosh, I hope he likes this because I am totally out of ideas and if I have to go back to the drawing board one more time….)!  BIll took my pen made a couple of corrections, closed the book and smiled from ear to ear, saying “It’s PERFECT”!!   I gave Bill a great big hug and felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I couldn’t stop smiling all day long!!  Many thanks to Bill and Jane and the countless hours for guiding me!! I received feed back from some of the guys before the final draft was done and they seemed to be pretty good with it, couple of conditions…no girly stuff and has to red and white!!

Namaste or Have a nice day!! Nicole

What brought YOU to the MAT??

It is interesting on life’s journey the people that we connect with and gravitate to. Recently I made a connection with a fellow Dane.  It’s not to often that you meet someone with a shared heritage especially coming from a tiny country like Denmark.  The day will filled with emails about our family’s traditions and similarities.  This entire conversation started with me asking, “out of curiosity, your name looks like Danish”? In the end this man thanked me for bringing back fond memories of his childhood.  Yes this is “Not a Yoga” blog well sort of….it still keeps in the thinking of  the core roots of Yoga; connecting with people and simply being kind!! This fellow Dane also mentioned the nomadic viking blood of roaming around, which is also flows through my veins and probably why I am so connected to Yoga with it’s portability and opportunity to either practice as a group or solo!

One of my students mentioned something to me and it prompted me to think about a Yogi that I trained with last year! I remembered  a conversation that I had with Seane Corn and some advice that she offered to me.  Seane talked about what was the one thing that brought me to the mat in the first place and to always remember why!!  Some students are just meant to teach and  have been selected to journey down the teaching path for a reason.  Although I am a Operating Nurse by trade, I view teaching yoga like nursing but in a different way!  Sometimes we all just need a gentle reminder why we came to the MAT in the first place!   Perhaps you are wondering what brought me to the mat….I suffered a trauma that changed the course of my life forever.  After I had time grieve I was ready to smile again and find some peace….that is when I found the MAT!! As a Yogi I would say the mat is my salvation, as a Dane I would say it is my ValHalla!!

New Generation of Soldiers and YW Yogies!!! Namaste!

There is something to be said for people coming to together for different reasons!!  Even though I am a little older “age wise” than some of my YW students we have bonded so incredibly well! Mike, Nick and Jonas attend at least three of my Yoga Classes a week and honestly these guys are totally cool!  I am the baby of my family with many years separating myself from my three siblings.  It is kinda funny how I have bonded with these three Soldiers I feel in many ways like they are the little brothers that I never had!!!  I am so glad we connected through Yoga. Jonas is going back home so and of course I will miss him and his AWESOME CROW AND WHEEL in class. Jonas has given me lots of great tips about YW and the importance of educating students why this program is so special and unique!! Thankfully I have Nick and Mike to hang around with until December so I am sure will will have many more YW Road trips and adventures!! I have come to learn that Mike and I are very similar in many ways with our thought process (Mike always likes to hold the postures just a little longer than everyone else)…oh ya Mike….Your wheel and posture alignment is amazing!!  And Nick he is too funny how he makes fun of my “YW Networking” ways handing out business cards etc! One thing Nick, you have the best postures sitting cross legged with your hands in your heart centre you truly do look like and angel..maybe not the most manly comment but you really do look peaceful!! Studio Bliss home of Yoga Warriors Canada!!!!

When I first stepped into Studio Bliss a couple of years ago I automatically felt at home!  The traditional vintage building transformed me to my first yoga studio in Victoria,B.C.  As soon a I introduced myself to Ann Green I felt instantly connected to her energy and also felt like I had a new Yoga home after moving every second year from place to place.  So when I decided to bring Yoga Warriors to Canada there was no question the Studio Bliss would be the perfect home for such a special program.  I approached Ann about the program and even before I had a chance to explain the concept of Yoga Warriors Ann said, “Yes, I believe in You and whatever I can do to help just let me know”!!   She has keep true to her word with wonderful support and encouragement!!

When I think of Ann Green I don’t only think of her as A Yogi or a Studio owner…I think of her as a very dedicated soul to this community and think of all the goodness that she has planted her.  Ann, look at all of the wonderful things that are growing in this community because of your “shine”!!!  Ann is obviously very dedicated to those that wear a uniform ie: Fire, Police, EMS, Nurses, Doctors and Soldiers.  As a first responder myself thanks for your support and as a friend so happy we will always be connected!!

Honestly, my Viking roots run very deep by traveling and never living in one place for more than a couple of years.  So other than my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario my only other home and home to Yoga Warriors is 72 Dunlop St. East Barrie, Ontario (Studio Bliss)!!!

Namaste Always ANN!! Dedicated to my friend Ann Green!

Lots of Love and Hugs

Nicole Taylor

First Yoga Warriors class in Canada!!

Thanks to all of my wonderful friends and students that have helped me make Yoga Warriors’s in Canada a success!!

YW is such a terrific organization and I’m thrilled that it has become part of my life.  When I first started out on this journey taking the teacher training in States I often wondered if this challenge was more than I bargained for bringing such a big program to Canada and starting at “ground zero”.  At times I will admit it has been difficult getting the program lifted off, but often “the road less traveled” is the most rewarding and fulling path (especially when it comes to helping others).

One aspect of this journey that I have been thinking about lately is: is this my Karma (action) or my Dharma (purpose) that has connected me to Yoga Warriors?   Although it is true the two go hand in hand I believe that is it more my Dharma that drives me to keep this program moving forward in Canada.  I suppose in the big picture it doesn’t really matter (Karma or Dharma) the fact is that Yoga Warriors has taken flight and being embraced by this wonderful community. One by One it WILL grow.
